How to clean fridge – tips (and tricks)

Personally, I hate cleaning my fridge. It’s a time-consuming job that I rather avoid doing. But once in a while I can’t deny it any longer: my fridge needs to be cleaned. In this case I go online and search for some cleaning tips (hopefully some tips that will make it more pleasant). I was happy to find some great tips how to clean fridge on other websites. Today I’d like to share them with you.

Clean your fridge in 5 easy steps

Step 1: preparation clean fridge

First of all unplug the refrigerator or turn the temperature knob off. During the cleaning process the fridge will be open a lot. We don’t want to wast too much energy, so it’s best to turn your fridge off for a while.

Step 2: empty the fridge

In our next step we empty the fridge. While you’re doing this check all the products to see if they are expired or not. You can do one shelf at a time or empty your fridge completely, it’s up to you.

In the meanwhile, check the botom of all the jars and packages to see if they are greasy. Clean them with water and soap if necessary.

Step 3: cleaning equipment

Grab a bucket and a sponge. Fill the bucket with warm water and add two tablespoons baking soda per litre of water. Baking soda will help eliminate those pesky odours.  It’s best not to use soap or detergent because they can leave behind a scent the food will absorb.

Step 4: cleaning

Take the shelves and drawers out of the fridge and clean them thoroughly. Don’t forget to dry them off. Give the inside of the fridge a good cleanse too (including the rubber seal around the door). Finally, clean the outside of the fridge. The door and handle can also become sticky.

Step 5: refill

Put all the products back in the fridge. If you have multiple products of the same kind with a different expiration date, put the products that expire first in the front row.

Bonus: tips

There you have it. Follow these 5 steps to clean your fridge and it will be good as new in no time. During my online research on how to clean a fridge, I also found some general tips that I would like to share with you:

  • A great way to prevent fridge smells: put some unscented cat litter in a pot and place it inside the fridge. The cat litter will absorb the smell.
  • When you have a spill, wipe it up immediately. It will save you some scrubbing later on.
  • For those of you who hate cleaning the fridge; wrap the kitchen shelves in plastic for easy cleaning. After a few weeks you can simply remove it and replace it with another sheet.
